The internet is growing, and will continue to grow for some time. If you have the right skills, website design can be an excellent career choice.
These days, you often need more than simple HTML knowledge to succeed as a website designer. Many sites are designed using PHP and MySQL or other languages and databases. The more you know, the more you can do for your clients and the higher your fees can be.
The first thing a freelance website designer must decide is which target market they want to go for. There are advantages to each.
Low priced website designers will get a great deal of work, and expectations are not quite so high. It's a popular place for beginners. HTML knowledge alone may be adequate, and you may be able to work off a few templates that you have created for most of your clients. Even so, most will want you to be capable of installing discussion boards or shopping cart systems, as most websites need something of that sort. However, you won't need to create your own; just use some of the free ones readily available.
Mid range website designers get perhaps a little less work, but earn more per job or hour, depending on how you write the contracts, and overall earn more than most low priced website designers, despite working fewer hours. Expectations are much higher, of course. A basic knowledge of what search engines are looking for in a website is always a good thing, even if you aren't writing the copy itself.
High priced website designers NEED a great deal of knowledge. They are best off knowing how to program in at least one language, add a database, work with solid ecommerce solutions and so forth. Their prices are high, but so are the expectations of their clients. However, a high priced website designer should also know their tools well enough to be able to cope with the demands in a reasonable period.
Getting started can take a little effort. You could design a few projects for friends, family or a local charity, or you could go to websites such as Elance and build your portfolio through projects you have successfully bid on. Sites such as Freelance Work Exchange are also quite helpful in finding jobs.
The internet gives website designers a tremendous advantage when it comes time to market their skills. You could approach local businesses, or you can advertise yourself online. Obviously, a website designer needs a very professional looking website! The lack of boundaries means that you may never meet most of your clients or even speak to them over the telephone.
